About Team Kennet


Team Kennet is a community athletics club based in Newbury and Thatcham, welcoming athletes of all ages and abilities. From those taking their first steps in sport to experienced competitors, the club provides a supportive environment where everyone can develop and enjoy athletics.

We offer opportunities across track and field, cross country, and road running, with structured coaching and regular training sessions throughout the year. Our aim is to help athletes build confidence, improve performance, and enjoy being part of a team.

Training takes place at a range of local venues, including Crookham Common athletics track, allowing athletes to experience different disciplines and progress at their own pace.

As a volunteer-led club, Team Kennet is built on the commitment of its coaches, members, and supporters. We are proud of our strong links with local schools and our role in helping young athletes transition into club athletics.

At its heart, Team Kennet is about community, development, and a shared passion for sport.

Team Kennet is a community athletics and triathlon club based in West Berkshire, offering opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities.

We provide coaching and competition across a wide range of disciplines, including track and field, sportshall athletics, cross country, road running, and triathlon. Our triathlon programme includes swimming, cycling, and running, as well as multi-sport events such as biathlon and duathlon.

From young athletes taking their first steps in sport to experienced competitors, we welcome members aged eight through to veterans. Athletes have the opportunity to train regularly and compete in a variety of leagues, team events, and individual competitions throughout the year.

Training takes place at a number of venues across Newbury and Thatcham, with the recently refurbished Crookham Common athletics track now a key hub for the club’s track and field activity.

Team Kennet has a membership of around 500 athletes, spanning over 60 years of age groups. The club was one of the first in England to achieve Clubmark accreditation and has been recognised for its strong links with local schools, as well as the development of its dedicated volunteer coaches and support network.

At its core, Team Kennet is about participation, development, and being part of a supportive and ambitious sporting community.

What ages can join Team Kennet?
Team Kennet welcomes athletes from age eight through to veteran level. Training and competitions are available across all disciplines, with sessions grouped by age and ability.
Where does Team Kennet train?

We use a combination of local facilities, Primarily  Crookham Common athletics track for outdoor sessions and local sportshall facilities for indoor training, particularly during the winter months.

Session times and locations vary depending on age group and discipline, ensuring athletes receive appropriate coaching in the right environment.

How does Team Kennet ensure the welfare and safeguarding of its members?

At Team Kennet, the safety and wellbeing of all members — especially children and young people — is our top priority.

We follow UK Athletics safeguarding policies and best practices to provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for everyone involved in the club.

  • All coaches and volunteers working with young athletes are DBS checked and appropriately trained
  • We have a dedicated Welfare Officer who is the first point of contact for any concerns
  • Clear codes of conduct are in place for athletes, coaches, and parents
  • We promote a culture of respect, inclusion, and support across all age groups
  • Any concerns are taken seriously and handled confidentially and appropriately
